MyHeritage buys Geni.com, raises $25 in private funding round

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Family networking and genealogy website MyHeritage said it bought rival Geni.com as it continues to expand into the United States.

The Israeli company did not disclose how much it paid for Los Angeles-based Geni.com but said it was an eight-figure deal in a combination of cash and equity.

MyHeritage, which helps people delve into their ancestry and connect with long-lost relatives, is second in the sector behind market leader Ancestry.com, which agreed last month to be bought for $1.6 billion by a group led by Europe-based private equity firm Permira Advisors LLC

The acquisition is the first of the year for MyHeritage but eighth and largest since 2005. A year ago, it bought Utah-based FamilyLink.com.

MyHeritage also said it raised $25 million in a funding round led by Bessemer Venture Partners, while existing investors Index Ventures and Accel Partners also participated. The company has raised $49 million in total.

The funds will be used to boost growth of its historical content services and expand commercial operations worldwide. It said it will also enable MyHeritage, whose network has 72 million registered users, 1.5 billion profiles and 27 million family trees, to explore further mergers and acquisition opportunities.

Bank of England warns UK banks may lack enough capital

LONDON (Reuters) - British banks may not have enough capital set aside as a defense against future financial market dangers due to their over-optimistic assessment of the risks facing them, the Bank of England said on Thursday.

The BoE's Financial Policy Committee, which from next year will take charge of British bank regulation, urged the current regulator to reassess whether banks' capital properly reflects the risk of loans going sour and future fines for misconduct.

Banks' true capital position was probably worse than relatively healthy official numbers imply, and that this is hurting investor confidence, the BoE said.

"Progress by banks in raising capital has slowed and investor confidence remains low," the BoE said in its half-yearly Financial Stability Report. "Market concerns are likely to reflect in part uncertainty about bank capital adequacy."

The FPC has repeatedly urged British banks to raise capital levels, and November's report marks a stepping up of these recommendations, despite a slight reduction in the risks facing the financial system due to an easing in euro zone tensions.

"UK banks' capital buffers, available to cushion losses and maintain the supply of credit following realization of a stress scenario, are not as great as headline regulatory capital ratios imply," it said.

Information from supervisors suggested some British banks would suffer bigger losses on loans than they had made provision for, it said.

Banks had also persistently underestimated the scale of fines they would face for past misconduct.

"In 2012, the number of identified conduct issues has grown and it seems likely banks could face additional sizeable costs," it said, adding that external analysts had suggested further costs of 4-10 billion pounds for mis-sold payment protection insurance and the LIBOR rate-rigging scandal.

The system of risk weighting that banks use to judge how likely they were to face losses was also "complex and opaque" and probably undermined investor confidence, the BoE added.

The BoE is also concerned that banks continue to lend to British businesses and households at a time when it blames a lack of bank credit as part of the reason for the country's very sluggish growth.

Inadequate capital buffers are not an excuse for reining back on lending, the central bank said.

"The Financial Services Authority should ensure that firms either raise capital or take steps to restructure their business and balance sheets in ways that do not hinder lending to the real economy," it said.

Researchers at the University of Southampton are to undertake a new stage of a study aimed at improving the health and mobility of those suffering from the common complaint of 'walking on marbles' associated with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) in the feet.

RA is the second most common form of arthritis in the UK, affecting almost 600,000 people, which results in the destruction of joints around the body caused by inflammation.

Forefeet often contain some of the first joints to be affected and those with the condition often say that they feel like they are 'walking on marbles'. Mostly, people have thought that this was due to walking on foot joints that are affected by the RA.

The Health Sciences' FeeTURA study however, developed new ways of assessing the forefeet through the use of diagnostic ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging techniques. From this work, the team discovered that some of the swellings and associated feeling of 'walking on marbles' were related to inflamed bursae (a fluid-filled sac usually found in areas subject to friction) that had developed underneath the forefoot joints. These inflamed bursae were rarely detected by clinical examination.

The exact cause of the inflamed bursae is not known and a cure is yet to be found, however, the team is now looking at identifying inflammatory and mechanical markers to find the best ways of treating this complication in people suffering with RA. They will evaluate foot health treatments, such as targeted steroid injections, as well as medical management through the use of new drugs (called biologics).

This new stage of the study will be funded through a partnership between Solent NHS Trust and the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Southampton and supported by a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) clinical academic fellowship.

During the first stage of the study, which took place between 2006 and 2009, researchers at the University of Southampton developed a technique to better evaluate the forefeet and diagnose the 'marbles' using diagnostic ultrasound. Participants' who were assessed at the NIHR Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility (WTCRF), based at Southampton General Hospital, returned for re-assessment in the second stage of the study which discovered the changes that had occurred in the condition.

A third stage used an MRI scan to visualise the anatomical structures and 'marbles' more clearly in the forefeet (see photo) and resulted in researchers developing the first ever atlas to categorise the swellings originally identified in stage one.

Led by senior lecturer for Advanced Clinical and Expert Practice, Dr Catherine Bowen, this new stage of the treatment study will be carried out by clinical academic researcher, Lindsey Hooper, who recently won a prestigious special award from Wessex HIEC for the previously completed MRI work.

Dr Bowen comments: "Although more common in the UK than leukaemia and multiple sclerosis, awareness of the severity of rheumatoid arthritis is limited.

"Our linked study aims to significantly improve the lives of those affected by the condition in their forefeet, reducing the severity of the symptoms including pain, inflammation, poor sleep, fatigue and depression, and therefore helping improve their mobility and wellbeing."

Lindsey Hooper adds: "This is an amazing opportunity to be involved in a study that is potentially life-changing for the many people suffering from this progressively debilitating condition.

"As I am maintaining my clinical role as a rheumatology podiatrist whilst also completing the research it means the findings can be fed directly back into clinical practice, so that local patients receive the most up-to-date care options."

5 Reasons to Mix Social Media and Restaurants

When it comes to going social, some of the best and brightest pioneers are restaurants. The sharing-driven nature of social media mixes well with the visual world of the restaurant industry. We?ve all seen people snapping photos of their dish to share on Facebook (and maybe indulged once or twice ourselves). In fact, there?s a dizzying array of ways that consumers can interact with and endorse restaurants on social media, including check-ins, photos, recommendations, tips, lists, and much more. So really, the question at this point is why wouldn?t a restaurant be using social media to help them achieve their business goals? And yet, there are some pretty great businesses that would do well to use social media that are not seizing the opportunity. Today, we?re going to go over those opportunities using two businesses that haven?t really made the jump as our examples.

The restaurants we?ll be examining today are Wings Over and Kings Family Restaurants. Wings Over is a group of franchises born out of Massachusetts, specializing in delivering hot and tasty wings made fresh (I used to be a delivery driver for them ? try the boneless Honey BBQ, you WILL thank me). Kings Family Restaurant is a chain of American-style dine-in restaurants with a history starting in the Pittsburgh area. Both of these chains have dipped their toes, in one way or another, into the social sphere, but neither is really jumping in the way that they should be. Let?s take a look at what they?re missing.

1. Reviews

Social media provides many channels through which a restaurant can garner reviews. For instance, Foursquare has Tips that users can leave, Facebook has Recommendations, and of course sites like Yelp and Google+ Local are completely built around the review mechanism. Frequently, marketers like to point out that these systems give restaurants the ability to both remedy any problems with customers and get their side of the story out for everyone to see. Seeing as conventional wisdom holds that finding a new customer is as much as ten times more expensive than keeping one, this sounds like a remarkably cheap way a business can prevent customer loss.

However, there is a more tangible benefit to businesses beyond that. A recent study by two prominent Berkeley economists discovered that as little as a half-star difference in a restaurant?s Yelp score would swing their business up by about 27%. In the restaurant industry, where margins are often very tight, this could mean making or breaking a new location. By taking the right steps to get customers to review the site, a restaurant could see a nice return on their investment.

2. Branded Search Prominence

Social sites also aid in ensuring that your restaurant shows up when someone is using what?s called a ?branded search?, like ?Wings Over Evanston? or ?Kings North Versailles?. For example, let?s see what comes up when we search for ?Kings Monroeville?.

What we find is that a TripAdvisor.com page is the top result. Additionally, it has a 5-star rating underneath the page title, making that result stand out on the page. This is not ideal for Kings, as the top result routinely receives the most traffic. This robs Kings of the opportunity to interact with that visitor and get them to convert on one or more goals.

For example, if a customer interested in rewards programs lands on the TripAdvisor page, that customer will not see Royal Rewards section of the Kings Site, which they probably would have converted for. A simple check of their analytics would probably reveal a discrepancy between visitors who visit the Royal Rewards page from the Monroeville search versus those who land on the site from higher-ranking location searches. Since rewards programs can be a big driver of repeat business for restaurants, Kings is actively losing money in this example because of the discrepancy.
Social media can help resolve this in several ways. As part of a larger content strategy, social media can serve as a channel to help spread content optimized to improve the rankings of pages for branded searches. This leads to more people linking to that content and social signals being attributed to it. Those links and signals help that page rank in the number one spot when someone is searching for the terms that content is optimized for.

Social media can also provide the same kind of rich snippet oomph that the TripAdvisor link enjoys. By linking pages with Google+ Local profiles, pages enjoy a large amount of rich information on branded searches. Take a look at what comes up when we search for Wings Over Evanston.

As you can see, the results show the aggregate reviews they?ve received from Google users, as well as a large knowledge graph section on the right hand side of the page with a map, at-a-glance information, and more. This makes the result much more attractive ? rich snippets increase click through rates of pages as much as 30%, a huge boon. Coupled with the revenue boost that from positive reviews garnered on social sites, these little changes make a huge difference in a restaurants bottom line.

3. Search Discovery

Another tangible way social sites help with a restaurants bottom line is by increasing the likelihood they?ll appear in non-branded searches. A non-branded search is something like ?Boneless wings State College? or ?Diners Robinson Township?. It does this by functioning as part of a larger content strategy, just like with branded searches. A company will create content that is optimized for non-branded keywords they wish to rank well for, then use social networks to share and facilitate the spread of that content. This, in turn garners social signals and additional links to the content, if properly positioned and created. Likewise, this helps to move the page up the rankings, driving more traffic. That traffic can then be called to join their social sites, creating a positive feedback loop for the restaurant.

4. Social Signals

Social signals are the interactions a particular page or piece of content on receives on social networks. We?ve heard twice now from Matt Cutts those social signals are playing a role in determining the results of a search query. Currently, I would guess that effect is pretty minor. We have only really seen correlation studies thus far, and the most thorough attempt at a causal study that I?ve seen only concluded that they might not be, an indefinite answer. However, we can be reasonably confident that social signals will yet play some role in the results going forward. Having active social presences to help propagate content and creating pages that will accrue authority on the various social graphs now is a smart move. Additionally, social media is not going to go away; it will only become more prevalent. It?s better for a business to get in as soon as possible and find what works for them early, than to try and play catch up later on ? like some businesses who ignored their search efforts or even the internet altogether.

5. Social discovery

The last way that social sites can increase the business that your restaurant receives is through social discovery. Social sites like Foursquare or Urbanspoon have core components that help their users discover restaurants they might like. These choices are influenced by user reviews and activity the restaurant receives on those networks. By increasing the likelihood someone will interact with your business in that way, a restaurant will see more business.

Beyond social discovery tools, restaurants can increase awareness of their business through interacting on social sites. User interaction on social sites appears in the feeds of those users friends, creating a ripple effect for a restaurants awareness or content. Likewise, responding to those comments increases the likelihood of exposure for a restaurant on a social site.

So, in review, there?s plenty of ways that restaurants benefit from social media programs. Reviews have a direct and causal relationship to driving increased business, with a half-star on Yelp being estimated to swing a 27% increase in diners. Social sites can enhance those reviews, provide a platform to save potential lost customers, and can put those glowing reviews directly into the search results and drive diners to click on your site. They can also assist in other programs designed to increase your restaurants visibility in branded and non-branded searches. And finally, they can lead to your restaurant receiving new business through social discovery tools like Foursquare. It?s worth pointing out that all of these benefits are additional to the effects social tie-ins can help on your on-going marketing efforts, including increasing repeat customers and increasing things like Top of Mind Awareness, among others. Make no mistake that laws and regulations NEVER catch up with technology, but simply evolve to meet new circumstances. The all-in one package based upon a subscription fee does away with complicated and expensive software licences that need managing and updating regularly.

• Reduced reliance on external consultants?

Data stored in the cloud can be accessed from virtually anywhere with an internet connection.

Weaknesses

Small and medium-sized organisations are more likely to embrace the benefits of the cloud than larger companies which may have complicated legacy systems.

Organisations will still need to have ?control? over data and information to meet business, legal and regulatory requirements. For many, the?idea of giving up?control of the hardware that carries business critical data and?outsourcing confidential customer data to a third party is an?unsettling concept.

All segments of the cloud computing market ? Software as a Service (SaaS),?Infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and?Platform as a Service (PaaS) -?will be influenced by the overall state of the economy and global demand for IT services.

Opportunities

Smaller firms are nimble and thus more easily able to move to the cloud and take advantage of cloud computing?s ?many cost-saving benefits.

Cloud services will continue to grow with increasing competition from both established players and new entrants. Some observers estimate that the cloud market will top $270 billion in 2020?with SaaS?offering more growth opportunities than any other segment

• Consolidation in legal and regulatory environment

Threats

Many IT professionals will need to re-invent themselves as organisations do away with expensive IT Departments.

European Union (EU) law states that organisations can only transfer data outside the EU if that country?s data protection laws are adequate (to European standards). With cloud computing, you don?t know where in the world your data is held even though you are still liable for it.

Should a court or tribunal require your organisation to produce data or information (e.g. to defend allegations of breach of contract or for an employment disciplinary), can it retrieve them easily and guarantee that they meet evidential standards?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? White House economists warned Monday that the uncertainty of a potential hike in taxes next year for middle class taxpayers under the looming fiscal cliff could hurt consumer confidence during the crucial holiday shopping season.

In a new report that coincides with Congress' return after the Thanksgiving holiday, the White House says that if lawmakers don't halt the automatic increase in taxes for households earning less than $250,000, consumers might even curtail their shopping during the current holiday season.

"As we approach the holiday season, which accounts for close to one-fifth of industry sales, retailers can't afford the threat of tax increases on middle-class families," the report says.

The study by President Barack Obama's National Economic Council and his Council of Economic Advisers also says a sudden increase in taxes for middle-income taxpayers would reduce consumer spending in 2013 by nearly $200 billion, significantly slowing the economic recovery.

The figures echo estimates by private forecasters and by the Congressional Budget Office.

Congress and Obama have until the end of the year to avoid across the board tax increases that would do away with rates set during the administration of President George W. Bush and restore higher tax rates in place during President Bill Clinton's administration when the economy was robust and the federal government had a budget surplus.

Many middle income taxpayers also would be exposed to automatic tax increases under the Alternative Minimum Tax, which is designed to guarantee a certain level of tax payment by wealthier taxpayers.

According to the report, a married couple earning between $50,000 and $85,000 with two children would see a $2,200 increase in their taxes.

Obama wants the Bush-era tax rates to remain at their current level for households earning less than $250,000. He is calling on Congress to increase taxes for families earning more than that threshold.

Obama's plan is part of an overall deficit reduction package that would increase tax revenue by about $1.5 trillion and reduce spending by a similar amount over 10 years.

Congressional Republicans, led by House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio, have said they are open to including tax revenue in any budget package but have balked at any plan that raises tax rates on wealthier taxpayers. They argue that higher rates would also hit some small businesses.

NY Times CEO Mark Thompson in London for BBC testimony

(Reuters) - New York Times Co Chief Executive Mark Thompson was in London on Friday to answer questions at a BBC inquiry involving a shelved "Newsnight" program about the late Jimmy Savile, who is accused of sexually abusing hundreds of young people for decades.

"Thompson is expected to be back in the office on Monday," said a New York Times spokesman who confirmed Thompson was at the BBC-appointed inquiry.

Thompson was head of the BBC from 2004 until September during the controversy surrounding the news program that investigated the allegations about Savile.

While the program never aired, the BBC instead ran laudatory shows about Savile, the popular "Top of the Pops" BBC presenter, who died last year.

In October, a rival broadcaster aired a program about Savile that tipped a series of scandals -- including another Newsnight program that wrongly accused a former politician of committing sexual abuse-- that has roiled the British broadcaster.

It caused its director general George Entwistle to step down and has sparked police and parliamentary inquiries

The Guardian reported on Friday that Thompson was expected to be questioned about what he knew about the Savile allegations and when he knew about them. Thompson was not at the BBC during the other Newsnight program that aired false allegations.

Thompson did not immediately responded to a request for comment about the details of the inquiry.

Thompson started his job at the New York Times on November 12.

"It strikes me probably daily as I ride around the city, or sometimes when I'm sitting at home at night, and it's 10 o'clock and my phone's not ringing. Or I get up in the morning, and I go, 'Oh my gosh, I've slept five hours," said Police Chief Cathy Lanier, who joined the department amid violent 1991 street riots. "It strikes me quite often how different things are now."

The drop reflects a downward trend in violent crime nationwide and is in line with declining homicides in other big cities. Though killings have risen in Chicago, New York City officials say homicides dropped to 515 last year from 2,262 in 1990. Houston police reported 198 homicides last year, down from 457 in 1985, while Los Angeles ended last year with fewer than 300 after reporting 1,092 in 1992. Across the country, violent crime reported by police to the FBI fell by 3.8 percent last year from 2010.

Though D.C. is hardly crime-free today, and crime in some categories is even up, the homicide decline is especially notable in a place where grizzly acts of violence ? sometimes not far from the U.S. Capitol ? embodied the worst of the crack scourge.

Everyone agrees there's no single cause for the trend.

One overarching factor is the city's continued gentrification ? the 2011 median household income of $63,124 is higher than all but four states, census figures show. Whole city blocks have been refashioned, drug dens razed, a Major League Baseball stadium built in place of urban blight, high-rise public housing replaced by less-dense garden style apartments. Though the poverty rate has risen, the growing wealth has pushed impoverished communities farther away from the city center. Some crime has also migrated to neighboring Prince George's County, Md., though homicides are down there too.

"There are just more physical places in Washington, D.C., that are affluent and safe than there used to be," Roman said.
