Golf: Westy pleased with Memphis display

Lee Westwood admits he was happy with his decision to play the St Jude Classic just a few days before the start of the US Open.

The 38-year-old was the defending champion at the Memphis event and made it clear that he was always going to come back and defend his title despite the fact that it would leave him with just three days rest before the start of the year's second major.
The Englishman was unable to make it back-to-back victories at Southwind, however, after fishing in a tie for 11th on six-under par, as Harrison Frazer took the title after beating Sweden's Robert Karlsson in a play-off.
Despite finishing down the field, Westwood believes it was a worthwhile exercise to play the event, as it allowed him some vital match practice so close to the Congressional show-piece.
"I'm pleased, because I shot 69-70-69-66 this week and that's a pretty good score," he said. "This course is a good warm-up for the Open. It's not an easy test. I enjoyed coming back here as defending champion, all the people were great."
It was a case of deja vu for Karlsson, who also lost out in a three-way play-off for the title 12 months ago, but the Scandinavian star has now begun to recapture the form that saw him play in the 2006 and 2008 Ryder Cups and he will be full of confidence heading to Maryland.
