Japan utility execs apologize for nuclear crisis (AP)

TOKYO ? Executives at the Japanese utility behind a nuclear power plant sent into crisis by a tsunami apologized to investors at a raucous annual shareholders' meeting. The executives were repeatedly interrupted with heckles, yells and questions of outrage.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. Chairman Tsunehisa Katsumata said Tuesday that the company was doing its utmost to bring radiation leaks under control and speedily compensate people forced to evacuate around Fukushima Dai-ichi plant.

The disaster has erased about 90 percent of the value of TEPCO stock. Fuel rods have melted at three of the plant's reactors after a March 11 earthquake set off a tsunami that knocked out cooling systems, causing the world's worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl.
